Anomaly detection in production and test data

Statistical anomaly detection can flag unusual process or test signatures for human investigation; it should not itself decide disposition.

An anomaly is a prompt to look closer, not a verdict; treat a flagged reading the same way a control chart's out-of-control point is treated — investigate before acting.

False-alarm rate matters as much as detection rate here: a tool that floods reviewers with unremarkable flags will be ignored within weeks, defeating its purpose.

PUT THIS INTO PRACTICE

  1. 01Route anomalies to investigation, not automatic disposition.
  2. 02Track false-alarm rate alongside detection rate.
  3. 03Tune thresholds against reviewer capacity, not theoretical sensitivity.
